Microsoft says it will sell all of its software and devices to Microsoft, including its Windows 8 operating system, by 2018
Microsoft has confirmed that it plans to sell all its Windows operating systems to Microsoft by the end of the year.
The announcement was made Tuesday at a press conference at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash.
The announcement comes as Microsoft faces a $US15 billion restructuring and a $10 billion restructuring charge by U.S. shareholders for the past three quarters.
The company announced plans to split its Windows business into two parts.
The first, called the Surface brand, would be sold under the Surface line, while the second, called Windows, would remain under the Windows division.
Microsoft is still not clear about the new business models for its Windows-based devices, which include Windows phones and tablets.
Microsoft declined to say when or if it plans for a new Surface phone.
