VR headset may be cheaper than Oculus, say experts
A new report claims that a VR headset called the Oculus Rift costs more than $200.
That makes it the cheapest VR headset currently on the market, and the cheapest yet to hit the market.
“Oculus is still a good product, but the prices are way out of whack,” said Michael A. Kugler, a professor of marketing at the University of Southern California and co-author of the report.
“The cost is way out over the heads of most people.”
The report was released Monday by Kugner’s firm, VRMarkets.
It’s based on an analysis of nearly 10,000 consumer Oculus Rift headsets sold between April and October.
It found that the Rift cost about $60 to $70 on average, and a few thousand dollars more than the average price of a consumer headset, which was about $250.
That is the same as the average cost of a high-end gaming PC, according to PCWorld.
It also compares the Oculus to similar devices on the Rift and other headsets from Sony, HTC, and Microsoft.
The average cost per person for a new Oculus Rift headset was $200, the report said.
While the Oculus is a good VR headset, it costs way too much for most consumers, Kug, who was not involved in the study, told the Financial Post.
It is very expensive, Kegler said.
It doesn’t feel like you’re getting the best VR experience.
If you’re looking at the Oculus, and you’re on a $400 or $500 headset, you’re probably getting a much better experience than if you’re paying $200 to get a $200 headset.
If I’m at a convention and I see people with Oculus, they’re not going to buy it for $100, $150, $200 headsets, Kigler said, adding that the price of the Oculus headset is “a lot to ask for.”
The VRMarket report said that there are still some issues with Oculus Rift, which is why its current price is $200 more than other headsets.
“One of the problems is the headset itself is really expensive, and so people don’t want to spend a lot of money to get that headset,” said Kug.
“People also want to have a good experience, and not have to spend too much money on a VR experience.”
The new report also says that the Oculus doesn’t support VR headsets that are bigger than a smartphone, or smaller than a laptop.
“There’s a lot more to it than the size,” said Matt Rogers, a technology analyst at the consumer research firm Gartner.
“For example, a phone-sized device might cost $150 for a $500 VR headset.
And that’s not even including the cost of the display and the cables, the display is also much more expensive.”
Rogers added that the company’s initial launch of the Rift headset on March 14, 2016, did not provide enough information about how the headset would work.
“If you look at the current pricing structure, I think it’s a very expensive device, and I think people will continue to buy that device,” Rogers said.
“That’s the way it’s supposed to be, but I think the Oculus VR headset will go through a lot.
I think consumers are still going to be happy with the Oculus as a VR product.”
The Oculus Rift has been available for more than a year, but has been a virtual reality nightmare for many people.
Many people have reported that they experience nausea, dizziness, and headaches after using the Rift, according the report, which noted that people who use the Oculus don’t need to be tethered to a TV for the experience to work.
The Oculus has also been criticized for the price, with some companies selling VR headsets for more money than what consumers can afford.
The report notes that Oculus has been criticized before for poor sales of the VR headset and its poor track record with developing software.
“While the Rift has a relatively large and well-established consumer base, the Rift experience does not meet the high standards consumers expect from VR,” the report states.
“Additionally, it is not yet clear that Oculus is addressing the problems that led to the consumer backlash to its original Rift, including price, price and price again.”
